Analysis of DNA Ploidy Patterns of Anal Cancer -Correlation to the prognosis

Abstract
Using flow cytometric DNA analysis of paraffin embeded tissue, DNA histograms were successfully obtained from the 46 primary anal cancers patients. Analysis of DNA content in primary cancers showed that 25 were diploid(54%) , 4 were
tetraploid(9%),
and
17 were aneuploid (37%). The ploidy patterns of metastatic lymph nodes and locally recurred lesions were similar to the primary lesions.
DNA ploidy patterns were not significantly different according to the anatomical sites and the pathological stages. No statistically significant effect of DNA content on five year survival could be demonstrated, but the disease free five year
survival
rates were significantly different according to the DNA ploidy patterns. The disease free 5 year survival rate of nondiploid anal cancer was 35% and that of diploid was 75% . The local recurrence rate of the diploid anal cancers were less than
that
of
nondiploid anal cancer (22%: 56%).
The DNA ploidy pattern of an anal cancer was one of the independent prognostic factors.
